Season Preview and First Week Results Review

Posted Thursday, April 12, 2007 by Perry King
In 2006, Dobbs Ferry's track and field team was a fairly small and developing team that saw a lot of improvement as the season advanced and ended up taking some places at the one postseason event it attended, the Section 1 Class C Championship. In 2007, the Eagles are a much expanded team with a lot of new young members. Expectations are that the team has a good shot at placing high in many events especially in the running competitions where the team is very strong.

This review is based on the first meet's results, the results of other teams in the area during the first week, and the somewhat spotty records of last year's three main posteseason events (the Westchester Class C Championship, the Section 1 Class C Championship, and the State Qualifier DII Meet). There is a breakdown for each event for boys and girls based on recent results and the top and final place position's (usually either 3rd or 6th) time or distance as a frame of reference as to what level you may need to get to in order to win a place in a postseason meet. Many results from 2006 are incomplete and Class C schools often do not compete heavily in some events. Note that for the State Qualifier meet, generally only the first place finisher actually qualifies to go to the New York State Championship.

Last year at the Sectionals, Dobbs got outstanding performances in two events from two athletes. Graduated weight guy Anthony Goodwin won the shotput by more than 5 feet and was edged out for first in the discus. I believe that with a first and second Dobbs should have had a score of 18 points but seems to have been credited with 8??? On the girls side, the then freshman Phoebe Maddox turned in great performances in taking a third in the 200 and a tie for third in the 400, totaling 11 points for the Eagles. The challenging news for Phoebe is that her last year's chief competition, Kim Piard of Albertus Magnus and Olivia Bruton and Leigh Murphy of Bronxville are all back and running very well. And that Smith girl from Alexander Hamilton can also fly, as we learned on Tuesday.

(Updated 4/19 following Westlake meet.)
