Track 2007 Sectional Meet Results

Posted Friday, May 25, 2007 by Perry King
The Section 1 Class C Track and Field Championship Meet was held at Hen Hud HS in Montrose on Thursday May 24 on a boiler of a day with the temperature in the high 80s and the sun beating down on the track.

The developing Eagles team took another big step forward by breaking the 20s mark on both the boys and girls score and bettering their marks from last year. In the always screwed up "official totals" the most important competition of the day featured the Eagles girls beating the boys by .67 of a point, 24 - 23.33. The boys might want to ask for a recount since one 2nd, two 3rds, one 5th and two 6ths should also have earned them exactly 24 points unless the officials shaved off something for improper attire (the dragon lady was at the meet again). Until a recount takes place, girls rule and the boys just have to try harder.

The Eagles day was highlighted by two tremendous first place finishes. Lisa Tessitore captured the 100 meters from Hamilton's Tamika Smith in a personal best time of 13.0, and Sophia Veiras also had a personal best when she threw the shot put 27-7.75 to come up big when the favored competitors came up short. Scandalously omitted from the official tally, 7th grader Sofia Maluf also grabbed a 1rst place in the nonscoring 1200 racewalk when her competitors feared to put a toe on the track and allowed her to strut off with the gold.

On the boys side, Kadeem Scott bravely pushed through on hurting legs to get a 2nd in the 100 and joined with Alan Sanseverino, Devonte Brailsford, and Matt Higbie to get a 5th in the 4x100 relay. Kevin Dahill returned to bound high in the 100 hurdles for a 3rd place finish. The long-distance Pats each captured a 6th place, Newman in the 1600 and Wortner in the 3200, and joined with Evan Fallor and Viktor Mashalov to grab a 3rd in the 4x800 relay after mind-controlling frontrunner Pawling into a DQ.

The meet saw the final appearances for a group of seniors -- Paulina, Adrian, Kate, and Grace, Jon, Lauren, and Aly in invisibility cloaks who will really be missed next year until their photos pop up in the history slide show and the memories return. Another senior, Kadeem, will be going along with Lisa to the State Qualifier Meet on June 1 if his legs have recovered.

Congrats to all on a great season and even higher results next year as the team continues to grow. On the boys' side, Pawling will be losing 4 of their top runners for X-country and track, opening up some opportunity for the Eagles. On the girls' side, Bronxville loses nobody and will be further augmented by half of the town's girl population, so the Eagles will just have to keep getting stronger to challenge them.

--------

Pawling won the boys' team title although Westlake and Albertus Magnus gave them a great battle and were actually way ahead in the regular meet events. Pawling took five of 6 places in the steeplechase, with Chris Miller being the one intruder. The last two places in the event could have been won by sleepwalkers (hint, hint for next year, guys). Top performances included North Salem's John Knowlton's domination of the 800, Westlake's Michael Bliss's 1.3 second victory in the 110 hurdles, Albertus Magnus's Xavier Fowler's victory in the triple jump by more than a foot and a half, and Albertus Magnus's Jhordan Hayes' victory in the shot put by almost 10 feet with a gigantic toss of 51- 3.25. Individual double winners included Albertus Magnus's Evens Louisme in the 100 and long jump, North Salem's Alex Fleischner in the 200 and 400, and Pawlings Reid McGrath in the 3200 and 3000 steeplechase.

On the girls side, Bronxville dominated the meet as expected with places coming from everything that needs legs. The stars were Albertus Magnus's Kim Piard who won the 200 and 400 by a lot and Bronxville's Tori Flannery who won the 1500, 3000, and the 2000 steeplechase. Other multiple winners included Bronxville's Rachel Kim in the 100 and 400 hurdles and Albertus Magnus's Samantha Gabriel in the long and triple jumps.

The official tallies are listed below but do not include the boys high jump, which may explain why some of the scores don't add up correctly, though there is no conceivable explanation for the Dobbs boys score other than that the meet officials swindled Dobbs out of .67 points. Use that as a motivator next year.
