Brewster Bear Preview
Another exciting Saturday looms on October 6th as 10 of the 11 functional Section 1-C teams will be in action at either the Brewster Bear Classic or the St. Anthony's Invitational at Van Cortlandt Park. Slated to join Dobbs Ferry at Brewster are Pawling, Croton Harmon, Pleasantville, North Salem, Valhalla, and Dover. At VCP will be Bronxville, Irvington, and Albertus Magnus.
Some of the best runners in the state will be running at Brewster, including Colby Delbene of Pawling, Colin Anderson of Cornwall, and Mike Hickey of Pearl River for the boys, and Shelby Greany of Suffern, Natalie Busby of New Paltz, and Tappan Zee's star duo Emma Miller-Bedell and Sara Graney for the girls.
The Brewster meet will feature three Varsity races with team medals awarded to the top three and individual medals awarded to the top 25 in both the Varsity and JV. The 42 teams in the three Varsity races -- A, B, C -- have been divided somewhat on size except that A-sized school and state powerhouse Cornwall has been placed among the small C schools and the strong B schools Pearl River and Tappan Zee have been jumped to the A race. The other unusual assignments (due apparently to SAT issues) all add up to leave host Brewster as the only strong team in the B race while the A and C races will be very competitive. Hopefully merged results will provide a better read on school strengths.
With both the powerful boys and girls squads of Cornwall and Pawling running in the C race, Dobbs is most likely looking at a fight for the 3rd spot unless the unforeseen happens. Some individual medals should be won in both of the varsity races, and possibly in the JV races. There are four runners -- Delbene, Anderson, and Cornwall's Ian Clerkin and Tim Anzovino -- who are rated above Patrick entering the race.
The projected team finish 1-5 in the C race at this point is:
3. Dobbs Ferry
4. Byram Hills
5. New Paltz
3. New Paltz
4. Dobbs Ferry
The girls finished very close to New Paltz and their star runner Busby at Warwick.
