Eagles Warm Up for 2008 at Sprint Medley Relays
Dobbs Ferry kicked off the New Year with a rust-removing visit to Rockland Community College on January 2nd for the Sprint Medley Relays. The Eagles really needed the warmup action because just the walk from the bus to the field house was enough to put a permanent deep freeze on muscle systems during an evening when the temperature and wind chill factor went subzero. Though no medals were won by the 8 Eagle relay squads in the well-attended meet, as always everybody had a lot of fun trying to figure out how many times they needed to run around the track.
The only race in town was the sprint medley relay, an odd quadriped beast that consists of a 400 meter leg, followed by two 200 meter legs, and ending with an 800 meter leg. A race for each of the four high school grades plus an elite seeded race were held for both the boys and girls. Ramapo, New Rochelle, and North Rockland dominated the boys action, and for the girls the top teams were New Rochelle, North Rockland, and Suffern.
None of the Eagles' times were officially recorded, but Phoebe Maddox's assertive start and great kick on her opening 400 leg scored her a good (~64-65) time and Alan Sanseverino blazed past a few runners on his 200 leg. The rest of the runners put in solid performances in preparation for the League Meet, which is looming shortly on Sunday, January 13, at the Armory Track in Manhattan.
The Eagles squads for the meet with the listings based on the 400-200-200-800 relay order were as follows (with many runners going up a grade or two): Boys Frosh: A-squad (Taka Masuda, George Epstein, Matt Presta, Brendan Wortner), B-squad (James Constant, Zach Too-shy-to add-name-to-roster, Matt Holt, and Connor Culhane); Girls Frosh: A-squad (Sofia Maluf, Mary Constant, Karen Maehara, Sarah King), B-squad: Clara Winder, Shanna Yue, Joanne Mumbey, Rebecca Wiersma); Girls Soph: (Katie Martin, Jenn Sanseverino, Grete Falck-Pedersen, Lauren Hanley); Boys Junior: (Pat Newman, Jake Lowy, Ramson Ragin, Patrick Wortner); Girls Junior (Phoebe Maddox, Andrea Koenigsberg, Rachel Kagan, Isabella Natale); Boys Senior: (George Tzortzidis, Louis Lipson, Alan Sanseverino, Viktor Mashalov).
Squeezed in before the League Meet is one more warmup meet at RCC on Wednesday, January 9th. The meet's only race will be the 4x400, a relay actually included in the League Meet unlike the sprint medley. Again there will be 5 different grade-based and seeded races. Temperatures outside the field house are expected to be fairly balmy this time.
