Eagles Make Up Rye Neck Meet in Style

Persistence sometimes pays off, whether it entails getting a meet made up or getting the official results. The Eagles visited Rye Neck on Thursday, May 1 to run in a meet originally scheduled for April 29 but postponed for lack of officials. The results were not posted to the Journal News, but a little digging got us the scans of the scorecards which have been transcribed as best as possible with the scoring first through fifth places displayed instead of just the usual three.

In summary, the boys team piled up the points against the host Panthers and Clark Academy, winning DF 139, RN 40, and CA 28. After falling behind by 15 after three events and by 9 after 6, the girls flexed their muscles in the last 10 events to win by DF 119, RN 95, CA 6. Although after a two week layoff the times and distances were generally down from the hotly contested first meet at North Salem, there were a number of highlights.

Both of the Eagles squads swept all 5 places in the 800 meters, probably a first for the team. The boys augmented the 800 results by also sweeping the 1600. On the boys side Ramson Ragin prepped for his breakout Blind Brook performance by adding 5 inches to his triple jump best at Rye Neck. Brendan Wortner also gave a big performance by winning the 3200 in a great time, and Ron Nagor got a 2nd behind Kevin Dahill in the 400 hurdles and also added an official 5th in the 100 meters. The girls started big in the 4x800 relay by beating the Rye Neck boys and lowering their season's best time by 8 seconds. They also got a big performance from Caroline Dowdle in the shotput who edged teammate Sophia Veiras as the Eagles took four of the event's five places. Finally, Nicoleta Hardesty launched herself to a huge leap in the long jump.

There appeared to be some timing snafus in the meet. In the 100 meters, the top heat with Alan Sanseverino and Devonte Brailsford seems to have been timed by sundial, and Alan's apparent winning performance officially earned only a 4th, coincidentally the same place won by Melissa Rogow that prevented a Panther sweep of the girls 100. The girls 3000 meter race turned into the 3400 after the officials lost track of laps, and results below also include approximate times for a 3000 distance.

Overall, the boys got winning performances from Sanseverino in the 200, Evan Fallor in both the 400 and 800, Viktor Mashalov in the 1600, the younger Wortner in the 3200, Julian Caldwell won a photofinish over Dahill in the 110 hurdles, all three relay teams won, Brandon Brailsford used his seniority to edge brother Devonte in the shotput, and Ragin won the triple. Other notable performances included Ethan Geron and Brendan Casey teaming to get official 2nd and 3rd in the 100, Brailsford the Younger taking 3rd in the 200, Boris Opacic taking 3rd in the 400, Pat Newman garnering a 3rd in the 800 and 2nd in the 1600, and Mike Altman getting 3rd in the shot and 4th in the discus. The guys seemed to be getting the motion down in the discus better as the distances were mainly up. Also scoring were Will Rubin, George Epstein, and Joe Guiliano.

The girls got winning efforts from Mizuki Yamamoto in the 400 as she edged Anna Quintero, Sarah King won both the 800 and the 3000/3400, Lauren Hanley took the 1500, Dowdle got the shot, Hardesty took the long jump, Celia Muoser topped the high jump, and all three relay teams won. Also coming up big for the Eagles were Karen Maehara with a 3rd in the 800 and 2nd in the 1500, Izzy Natale with 2nds in the 800 and long jump, Allie Sheridan with a 3rd in the shot and 5th in the discus, and Maureen Lauer with a 3rd in the discus and 5th in the shot. Also scoring were Allie Jacobs, Rebecca Bortz, and Sofia Maluf.

The Eagles took the momentum from the Rye Neck meet to turn in some good times at Blind Brook four days later (results pending). The last three meets of the year will be the League, County and Sectionals.
