Brandon Brailsford Leads Eagles to Dozen Medal Haul at Counties

Dobbs Ferry had a nice medal hunting day at the Westchester County meet held at Byram Hills HS on Saturday, May 17. Brandon Brailsford broke into the Open Medals results with a 5th place shotput toss, and the Eagles rolled to their best results for the boys Class C totals in many years. Altogether the Eagles won 1 Open medal and 11 Class C individual or team medals. The kick from the County Meet should give a big confidence boost heading into the Sectional Championship at Bronxville on Thursday, May 22.

Brandon's 43-6.5 shot throw also earned him a 2nd in Class C behind Croton's TJ Hair, and it had another good twist since brother Devonte came through with a 3rd in Class C with a 39-8 throw. Their combined 4 points pushed Dobbs up to a tie for 4th in Class C team results with 19 points behind Bronxville, Croton, Woodlands (B team in Sectionals) and tied with Alexander Hamilton. The girls team also had good results as they matched last year's 8 points in almost exactly the same events (except for a switch in the relays) and combined two Class C 2nd and 3rd places apiece to finish in a tie for 7th.

Other Eagles who joined the Brailsfords in putting the pedal to the medal on the boys side were Evan Fallor who ran a personal best (PB) 4:53.21 to take 3rd in the 1600, Patrick Wortner who blasted a fast last lap in the 3200 to get down to a PB 10:29.16 and earn Dobbs its lone 1rst place, Brendan Wortner who defied his 8th grade status to finish 25 seconds behind Patrick in the 3200 and take 2nd with a PB 10:54.20, Ramson Ragin who leaped to a 37-1 third place in the triple jump, and the 4x800 relay team of George Tzortzidis, Pat Wortner, Viktor Mashalov, and Evan Fallor who ran a 9:30.50 to earn a 2nd place.

On the girls side the top individual performance came from Nicoleta Hardesty who grabbed a 2nd place in the long jump with a huge PB 14-5 leap. Also earning Eagle points were 8th graders Sarah King in the 3000 with a PB 11:24.35 for 3rd (missing an Open medal by one place) and Sofia Maluf with a PB 9:38.82 for 3rd in the 1500 Racewalk after the star Hastings walker Rebecca Katz apparently got DQed. To finish off the day, the 4x400 relay team of Andrea Koenigsberg, Nicoleta Hardesty, Lauren Hanley, and Phoebe Maddox sprinted to a school record 4:23.82 to finish a scant 11 seconds behind Bronxville.

Many other Eagles also got involved in the action. On a day where the sprinters had to battle a stiff headwind the whole way, Alan Sanseverino came up a little short in the 100 and 200 trials. Viktor Mashalov and George Tzortzidis just missed breaking 5:00 in the 1600, and Mike Altman joined the Brailsfords in the shot and discus events. Celia Muoser did the high jump through 4-4, Phoebe Maddox ran around a 63.4 in the 400, Celia Smith ran the 100 hurdles, Karen Maehara ran to a PB 12:22 in the 3000, Izzy Natale got a giant boost to a 5:41 PB in the 1500, and Andrea Koenigsberg joined Nicoleta in the long jump.

Great day for the Eagles as they get 4 full days to rest up for the Sectionals, which will be the last meet of the year for the team though some athletes may decide to go to the following State Qualifier meet if they are close to the standard for a trip to the State Championship on June 13-14 at Buffalo.
