Boys cross country preview: Southern/Central Westchester runners to watch

• September 1, 2008

Julian Saliani, Irvington: The junior should be in for a stellar season. He came on strong last year as he took fourth in the Class C meet in 17:41.80. At counties he claimed the 14th spot. He heads into this season as one of the top five runners in Westchester.

Sean Halpin, Iona Prep: This past spring it seemed as though Halpin turned a corner as he took seventh in the 800 meter Emerging Elite race at Nike Outdoor Nationals in 1:55.0. That race capped off a tremendous year for Halpin that started with a third-place finish at counties. As the top returning runner in Westchester, he should be in for a big year.

Sam Kohn, Scarsdale: The senior is the top returning runner from last year's county champs and Class AA runner-up. Kohn finished 11th in the Class AA meet in 17:06.88 and should be able to break the 17-minute mark at Bowdoin Park this season. A top-10 finish at the county meet should be well within reach.

Patrick Wortner, Dobbs Ferry: The junior is the top returning runner from Class C. At sectionals he placed second, running 17:35.05. He also finished 22nd at the county meet last year. He came close to breaking 17 last year, but fell just short as he ran 17:13.0 at Somers.

Dayton Flannery, Bronxville: After a season that saw Flannery place eighth in Class C in 18:14.13 as an eighth-grader, this year he should be one of the top freshmen in the section. After a year of varsity racing, Flannery should begin to show some improvements.
