Girls' Class C Sectional and State History and Preview, Part I

Posted Thursday, October 30, 2008 by Perry King

For the last four years, roughly the same group of schools have battled through the regular season and on toward the all-important Sectional meet in their area to determine which team and which 12 runners will represent their section in the New York Class C State Championship race for the boys and girls. A few schools like Greenwich and Irvington have moved to or from Class C and B or D during those years, but there has been a fair amount of stability during the period both in the pool of schools and even the teams that have represented many of the 11 sections. This preview provides a brief synopsis of the past 4-5 years for which results are easily available and gives a semi-deep preview of how the Sectional and State competition is shaping up, especially in regards to the Dobbs Ferry Eagles and Section I.

                     ------------------------------------------------------

The Bronxville Broncos have a long and stellar history in girls' XC going back three decades and many State Championships and  top NYS runners. A Class D team for much of the time, when the Broncos were moved to Class C in 2004 they instantly made Section I a powerhouse in the class. Bronxville won the State C title in 2004 and 2005 before its current nemesis in recent years, Greenwich Witches (yes, that is their nickname) moved up to Class C for a brief two year stay and won successive titles over the 2nd place Broncos. Interestingly, the battle between the two teams first took shape back in 2003, when as a Class D team the Broncos finished 3rd behind an Argyle team that featured 4 top-10 finishing 8th-graders named Emily and Ashley Fung, Caitlin Lane, and Hannah Davidson. The Fungs and Lane would go on to run for Class C\D Greenwich , while Davidson would go to Class AA Saratoga Springs, and the quartet would be storied NYS runners through last year.

With the Broncos dominating Section I behind such runners as Amanda and Caitlin Hudson, Tori Flannery, and Emma Clarke, the rest of the teams have been just fighting for the 2nd spot and to send some top runners to the States. Croton Harmon's Sophia Spring was the top standout among the non-Broncos with three top 10 finishes from 2004-2006, Hastings' Molly Burke also excelled as the 1-C champion in 2004. The strong group of Section I runners earning berths in the States has helped it to win 3 of 4 State Class C Section championships while backing up the Bronco runners.

Dobbs Ferry has never finished higher than 5th among the 1-C teams, but it has sent two runners to the States, with Carrie Hickey going first in the team's first year back in business in 2004 and Paulina Nunez going in 2006. With their group of young middle schoolers developing over the last two years, the Eagles are looking for more high places.

 Team Breakdown -- Section I

The following tables provide a summary of how the teams match up starting with Section I and then reviewing the top State teams among the other sections. The order is based on the Team Strength Score (TSS), the average of a team's top 5 runners' seasonlong Tully Speed Ratings

Team: Bronxville
Nickname:   Broncos
Section: I
TSS: 108.2 (123, 108, 106, 104, 100)
Top Runners: Caitlin Hudson, Amelia Phillips, Meredith Rizzo, Tori Flannery, Henrietta Miers, Olivia Bruton, Charlotte Cooley
History, 2004-2007: Sectional: 1st in 2004-2007. Tori Flannery was 1st in 2006-2007, and Amanda Hudson was 1st in 2005. States: 2nd in 2006-2007, 1st in 2004-2005.  Broncos have piled up a dazzlingly long list of individual honors in States too long to list here completely except for the top 10 placements. Tori Flannery (2005-2007), Emma Clarke (2004, 2006), Henrietta Miers (2005-2006), Amanda Hudson (2004-2005), Virginia Connor (2005).
The Wrap: Broncos again dominate Section 1 and top runner Caitlin Hudson should win Sectional championship and battle for spot in top 5 in States. The huge emergence of 8th graders Phillips and Rizzo has offset the down years for Flannery and Miers. Broncos’ depth makes them possible favorites for State title against Rhinebeck and Tully.

Team: Pawling
Nickname:   Tigers
Section: I
TSS: 83.2 (103, 93, 90, 78, 52)
Top Runners: Caitlin Jelinek, Anna Jelinek, Zoe Nagasing, Winona Mold, Caitlin Capalbo
History, 2004-2007: Sectional: 4th in 2006-2007, 2nd in 2005, 7th in 2004. Caitlin Jelinek 9th in 2007. Renee Liffland 7th in 2005.
The Wrap: The Tigers moved steadily into the #2 position in 1-C with a strong top 3 of runners, and the Jelineks and Nagasing are all candidates for the States.

Team: Irvington
Nickname:   Bulldogs
Section: I
TSS: 75.2 (113, 82, 75, 54, 52)
Top Runners: Annie Field, Megan Talay, Christina Paparo, Sasha Zweibel, Edwina Picon
History, 2004-2007: Sectional: 2nd in 2007, 2nd in Class B in 2006, 5th in 2005, 6th in 2004. Annie Field 6th in 2007. Mairin Din 9th in 2005.
The Wrap: Top runner Field should finish in top 3 in Sectional, but the Bulldogs have a tough job ahead knocking Pawling out of 2nd spot.

Team: Hastings
Nickname:   Yellowjackets
Section: I
TSS: 71.6 (87, 87, 76, 58, 50)
Top Runners: Emma Sander, Nora Howe, Emily Polstein, Melissa Lindner, Lauren Wilt
History, 2004-2007: Sectional:8th in 2006-2007, 6th in 2005, DNS in 2004. Molly Burke 6th in 2005 and 1st in 2004, and 8th in States in 2004. Noelle Considine 10th in 2005.
The Wrap: Yellowjackets have enough depth to take 4th and possibly make a run at the Bulldogs for 4th.

Team: Dobbs Ferry
Nickname:   Eagles
Section: I
TSS: 66.0 (97, 68, 63, 56, 46)
Top Runners:  Sarah King, Rebecca Wiersma, Izzy Natale, Chloe Wang, Clara Winder, Mary Constant, Shanna Yue
History, 2004-2007: Sectional: 6th in 2006-2007, DNS in 2005, 5th in 2004. Paulina Nunez 5th in 2006. Carrie Hickey 6th in 2004.
The Wrap: Young Eagles team lost most of top runners from 2007 but have enough depth for 5th and an outside shot at 4th. King is contender for States.

Team: Pleasantville
Nickname:   Panthers
Section: I
TSS: 59.6 (110, 77, 65, 25, 20)
Top Runners: Libby Lazare, Diana Phethean, Natasha Chapavalova, Elizabeth Proel, Caitlin Doddy
History, 2004-2007: Sectional: 3rd in 2007, 7th in 2006, NA in 2005, DNS in 2004.
The Wrap: Star runner Lazare should make 3rd trip to States, but the Panthers have too little depth in the 4th and 5th spots to challenge for a higher spot than 6th.

Team: Dover
Nickname:   Dragons
Section: I
TSS: NA (60, 28, - , - , - )
Top Runners: Jessica Kaufman, Krista Limoncelli, Candice Cardwell, Sam Grist, Nicole Wagner
History, 2004-2007: Sectional:9th in 2007, NA in 2004-2006
The Wrap: Dragons will battle with Croton Harmon for 7th spot in 1-C.

Team: Croton Harmon
Nickname:   Tigers
Section: I
TSS: NA (95, 30, - ,- ,- )
Top Runners: Sarah Costa, Caitlin Eddolls, Noa Sager, Anna Callahan, Rebecca Rose
History, 2004-2007: Sectional: 7th in 2007, 3rd in 2006, 7th in 2005, 9th in 2004, Hannah Rose 7th in 2007. Sophia Spring 2nd in 2006, 3rd in 2005, 2nd in 2004. In States, Spring was 7th in 2006, 5th in 2005, 9th in 2004.
The Wrap: Costa is a contender for States, but there is not enough depth behind her for the Tigers to have a shot at a spot higher than 7th this year.

Team: Rye Neck
Nickname:   Panthers
Section: I
TSS: NA (67, 24, - ,- ,- )
Top Runners: Kylie Van Buren, Christina Cook, Kelly Mancusi, Brittany Brescia, Kiran Pande
History, 2004-2007: Sectional:DNS in 2007, NA in 2004-2006.
The Wrap: Van Buren is a battler and Panthers may have a shot at beating out Dover and Croton Harmon for 7th.

Team: Valhalla
Nickname:   Vikings
Section: I
TSS: NA (49, 28, - ,- ,- )
Top Runners: Lindsey Eccleston, Alexandra Kinally, Kheiyasa Carter, Jessica, Halligan, Cassie Klaus
