2008 XC Wrapup: Eagles History

Posted Sunday, December 07, 2008 by Anonymous

Dobbs Ferry had a cross country team off and on for decades, but in the last 20 years the team has rarely had a big presence. XC began its most recent reincarnation in 2004 as a competitive team running in post season races. Carey Hickey, Paulina Nunez, and Scott Sitman were some members of the modern day squad. Hickey finished 6th in the Sectionals to qualify for the States.

The XC team’s sophomore season featured an early, short-lived version of a tent and the boys’ team miracle 3rd place finish at the Sectionals with Scott Sitman and Kevin Byrne as lead runners. The girls ran shorthanded with only three Varsity runners, but the emergence of Paulina Nunez with a 13th place finish in the Sectionals set the stage for a big senior year.

By its 3rd year, Dobbs Ferry XC had grown to a team of 35 runners with enough tricks up its sleeves to win meet championships and take home hardware. With a spiffy tent as HQ and a new home website, the Eagles flew high as senior Paulina Nunez blazed to a 5th place at the Sectionals and a State Meet appearance with a young girls team. David King was tops for the boys who packed away a 4th place result.

By its fourth year, Dobbs was on a serious roll as the boys
reached a ranking as high as 4th in the state and a very close 2nd place in the Sectionals. Patrick Wortner flew to a 2nd place Sectional finish and an Eagle runner’s third trip to the States. Led by veteran captain Lauren Hanley, a very young girls team of mainly middle-schoolers showed great promise as a team to be reckoned with in the future.

In its 5th year Dobbs racked up titles as the boys won the Big Red, League, and County Class C awards and the girls also won their League. Both teams finished among the top Class C squads in New York State, with the boys owning the 7th best ratings and the girls finishing in the top 25. Patrick and Brendan Wortner took their 3rd and 4th place Sectional finishes to the States along with Sarah King, who also grabbed a 4th place. The veteran boys set themselves up as perennial contenders and the girls used their surprise Sectional 4th place to emerge as a young and dangerous crew.
