Eagles Get in Gear at Section 1 SMR
The Dobbs Indoor Track team got revved up for the 2009 season on Wednesday night January 7 at the Rockland Community College fieldhouse by competing hard in seven sprint medley relay races and one field event. All of the races were composed of 400-200-200-800 meter legs run in freshman-junior-sophomore-senior-seeded contests. The fast pace made for many interesting baton exchanges. The Clarkstown South boys' Seeded and Senior squads ran virtually identical times at 3:45 to top the meet, while on the girls' side the storied team of Christy Goldman, Jen and Janelle Clayton, and Shelby Greany easily bested all the teams at 4:13.3.
Starting with the one field event the Eagles participated in among the limited choices, Stella Lemel upped her personal best by more than 10 inches as she placed 12th with a throw of 20-11.75 in the Seniors shot put event. The increased distance was a good sign going into the League Meet.
The SMR teams included many runners competing up beyond their actual grade status. The girls freshman (actually 8th grade) team was the first to hit the floor and Mary Constant, Clara Winder, Kim Anker (running the Anker leg?), and Rebecca Wiersma speeded to a 5:27.3 time, which earned 19th in a field packed with 5 Bronxville teams. The sophomore crew of Caitlin Horsfield, Joanne Mumbey, Megan Moynihan, and Shanna Yue followed with a 5:24.3 time for 22nd after a truly classic 3rd exchange. A second sophomore team of Elizabeth Burg, Lena Altholz, Mizuki Yamamoto, and Sofia Maluf finished in 24th in 5:35.6 after a slightly less convoluted 3rd handoff. The junior team of Morgan Wright, Rebecca Lowy, Nicole Cialini, and Rebecca Lieberman pulled in 20th at 5:48.7.
On the boys side, the only level below seniors that was run was for the sophomore class, and a team of George Epstein, James Majeau, Mark Sudak, and Brendan Wortner claimed 13th place with a 4:27.0.
The seniors races finished off the night as Lauren Hanley, Stella Lemel, Nicolette Addorisio, and Sarah King ran nicely to pilfer the 3rd place medals with a 4:48.2 time ahead of a lot of really big schools. The boys then stepped in with the A team of Taka Masuda, Ramson Ragin, Matt Goldwebber, and Pat Wortner running a 4:15.2 for 12th in the senior group. A second team of Alex Cambiero, Sergio Alvez, Sean Byrne, and Quin Wright got 29th with a time of 5:29.5.
Ramson Ragin, Pat Wortner and Sarah King head back to the RCC fieldhouse on Friday night as qualifiers for the triple jump and 3200 meter race at the Section 1 Coaches meet. On Sunday evening the big action occurs as the Eagles face off against their league opponents in a great night at the Manhattan Armory.
