Dobbs Ferry and Class C Cross-Country Preview -- Boys 2009 (Eagles Only)

2009 Boys XC Preview

The Eagles again fell a little short in their bid for a Sectional title in 2008, losing by 1 point to Irvington. After losing four of their longtime veterans to graduation, the question is whether they have enough strength behind their impressive top group to challenge for the title in a year in which perennial power Pawling has a very potent and deep senior squad and Irvington will be looking to restock for a third consecutive title bid.

Last year had a lot of high moments for the Eagles leading up to the close loss in the Sectionals. Among the honors were:

  •         1st in the Big Red Division II race.
  •         1st in League
  •         3rd in Varsity 1 race at Coaches meet and 12th overall
  •         6th overall in Westchester County meet and 1st in Class C
  •          2nd in Section 1 Class C race
  •          Finished runners at #23 and #26 in NY State meet.
  •          Team rated among top 6 Class C teams in Tully rankings and were consistently among the top county and Class C teams in the Lohud rankings. Nothing more needs to be mentioned about the consistent problems with the Armory\NY Milesplit Class C ratings and the reasons for breaking wind in their specific direction.

Individually in 2008 among the returning runners, Pat Wortner shone as one of the top runners in NYS in Class C, finished 1st in the Big Red Division II race, and took 23rd in the State Championship race. Brendan Wortner emerged big time as the #1 freshman at the State Championship race in all classes and finished as one of the top 30 NYS Class C runners. George Epstein made giant strides breaking into the tough Dobbs top 5 as a sophomore and cracking the 140 level in the Tully Ratings, placing him among the top12 runners in 1-C going into 2009. Ryan Malpass also came up big in a number of races as an 8th grader to establish himself as a vital part of the top 7 while finishing 27th at the Sectional meet.

With the graduation of veterans Evan Fallor, Viktor Mashalov, Pat Newman, and Boris Opacic, a number of spots have opened up in the Eagles’ top-7 squad, especially that all-important 5th spot. The two remaining runners from last year middle school contingent, Yusuf Kapadia and Keith Hickey, join XC newcomers or returners James Majeau, Yu Lin, Terry Taylor, and Henry Wagner, in the quest to provide the Eagles with the depth it needs to again challenge for the top spot in 1-C.

2009 should be an interesting and fruitful year for Dobbs XC if all the Eagles can hone their running forms and race strategies for optimal effort and if they can focus on the main goals for November 6th: strong development from Labor Day through Halloween, avoiding major injuries, and hitting the Sectionals with fresh legs and lungs and hungry for a title.

Record tables below include the runner’s ranking in the Tully XC ratings for 2008 if he scored above 140 with his rank among Class C runners in parentheses, time and place for the three end-of-season meets, and place at NY State Championship meet for those who qualified.
