Paulina Nunez and Binghamton Bearcats Take 9th at University of Albany Invite
College teams from all over the Northeast gathered at the University of Albany on Saturday, October 17 to compete in the Men's 8K and Women's 5K race. Paulina Nunez and the Binghamton Bearcats were coming off a team 4th place finish in 2008. Although they finished further back in 2009 with a 9th place finish, the team's average time was 2.7 seconds better than last year, so the overall competition at the meet appears to have been much stronger in 2009. Paulina had a big jump from last year when she ran 19:45.3 for 93rd place as the Bearcats' 9th runner in. This year she chopped almost fifty seconds off her time to finish 58th in 18:57.4 in the Bearcats' 4th spot. Breaking the 19:00 barrier and averaging 5:06 per mile were big milestones for the Eagles' former captain. Kim Law at 24th was tops for the Bearcats, followed by Rachel Miura, Lindsay Raulli, Paulina, Sarah Veith, Shannon Finnegan, and Terry Powell.
Last year's powerhouse Brown University was not at the meet and Middlebury came in first though their top runner was only 12th. One familiar face at the meet was ex-North Rockland HS 1500-meter Sectional champion Jackie Gamboli who came in a little ahead of Paulina in 49th for Marist. The Bearcats guys did well earning a 6th place.
Next up for the Bearcats is the America East Conference Championship at the University of Vermont on October 31 where they will vie against the other 8 teams in the conference: New Hampshire, Maine, Vermont, Stony Brook, Hartford, Albany, Boston University, and UMBC. Last year the Bearcats finished 6th with Paulina getting 50th as the team's 9th runner. None of the top 5 Bearcats from last year's AEC championship were among the top 5 runners for the team on Saturday, so they are clearly undergoing some changes in 2009.
