Eagles Race to Top Places at Freshman-Sophomore Meet
The younger Eagles were in action at the Rockland Community College Fieldhouse on Friday evening, December 18th as the 7th-10th graders competed in the second date of the Section 1 Freshman-Sophomore meet. The second tuneup of the season resulted in some nice improvements for the Eagles and three medals, including two of the gold standard. The meet also wrapped up before the Saturday death storm moved in, giving the Eagles a nice lead-in to the holiday season and 19-day layoff.
The meet got off on a high note for Dobbs as Sofia Maluf took control of the first event, the 1500m Racewalk, forging a 20 meter lead and fighting off a pack of challengers (both legal and illegal) to win comfortably by .3 seconds in a a time of 9:35.5. Though the time was about 50 seconds short of her personal best and 27 seconds behind her last year's time at the meet when she oddly finished 5th out of 5 entrants, it was enough to let her walk away with the gold this year.
The second Eagle gold came at the same distance, but this time in the 1500 meter run. Sarah King followed the same strategy as Maluf in bursting to a comfortable lead and then cruising to a 3-second win in a personal best time of 5:15.7. The Eagles made it a sweep of the 1500 heats as Shanna Yue moved up in the second half of the second heat to finish ahead of the pack in a 10th place overall time of 5:55.7. Mary Constant finished off the strong Eagle showing with a 6:05.6 time for 15th.
The girls competed in four other events on the evening. A quartet of Eagles ran In the 300m, with Krishna Pandya posting a 53.6, Kim Anker notching a 53.8, Yelena Krasnozhen getting a 56.8, and Lia Karakas taking a 62.9 time. In the 600m, Liz Quintero ran a 2:11.3 for 23rd and Sofia Maluf did a 2:15.2. The 1000m featured Rebecca Wiersma running a 3:56.9 for 18th. Finally the girls 4x800m relay team of Yue, Constant, Wiersma, and King finished off the Eagle night with a 12:05.2 for 8th.
The boys' highlight came in the 1600m race as Brendan Wortner engaged in an exciting duel with Suffern's Ryan Cross and Rye's Taylor Love to finish 3rd in a personal-best crushing time of 4:48.9. Grant Sheely had his own gripping battle in the 4th heat of the 1500m and also finished 3rd with a 39th place overall time of 5:49.2.
In the other guys' events, Joseph Park was the lone Eagle listed in the 300m results and ran a 50.4. Keith Hickey was in the 600m and ran a 2:05.7, and then ran the 1000m in 3:30.2. Nick Bacera composed the field segment of the Eagles team and threw a 23-9.5 best in the shot put. A few other Eagles competed in the 300m but no times were listed.
The Eagles will not see further action until after the New Year when they compete in the first day of the Dendy meet on Wednesday January 6th at the RCC Fieldhouse. The League IIC meet follows on January 10th.
