Section 1 Athletes Try to State Their Case at Qualifiers

On Saturday, February 27, a half dozen or so Eagles will join hundreds of other local athletes at the Armory to try to win one of the two or three spots in their event on Section 1's squad to compete at the NY State Championship Meet on Saturday, March 6 at Cornell University. With the prospects for winning one of the qualifying spots a pretty daunting task considering the top level competition, most of the partcipants will be focusing more on ending up their indoor season with a personal best and getting ready for outdoors. But in some events, the times or distances should be spectacular and the competition intense.

The top two individuals and top relay team in each event earn a ticket to the States, and third place individuals can also qualify if they meet the rigorous state qualifiying standard. This means of course that like with cross-country team qualification, if the top two relays teams happen to be in the same NY section, only one can go to the State championship. In the girls 4x800 relay, for instance, the top two NYS times have been run by the Saratoga Springs and Shenedehowa schools from Section 2. Last year, Bronxville won that event at the States and ran nearly 1 1/2 minutes ahead of the last place team. The 11 sections from the New York Public High School Athletic Association wil be represented at the States along with two teams from New York City's Public schools and Catholic schools associations.
Last year Section 1's girls racked up 4 titles at the States and the guys got 1along with a victory in the extra distance medley relay.

For Section 1, the expected outlook for the battle at the top for each event is as follows. It is always possible that athletes who are among the top contenders in more than one event will compete in just one event to optimize their chances to qualify for a State spot. Section 1's two NYS leaders are both on the girls side, with Suffern's Jen Clayton having a huge lead in the long jump at 20-5.75 as she seeks to retain her State title, and Lakeland / Panas's Carissa Leonardi has soared to 12-1 in the pole vault for an NYS best.

2009 Section 1 results in State Meet: Lincoln Gorton's Kem Ogbuagu, Arlington's Leroy Rouse, and Poughkeepsie's Joshua Graham went to the States. Ogbuagu qualified through preliminary and semifinal rounds and finished 8th in finals in 6.57.

State qualifying time requirement:  6.74

Kem Ogbuagu enters the 2010 meet with the best time along with Spring Valley's Winslow Dorsainvil at 6.44. Leroy Rouse has the third best time at 6.55 in his bid for a repeat appearance. Among the other favorites are Rodaine Robinson of Mahopac (6.57) and a couple of Class C athletes, Nat Recine of Bronxville (6.64) and Woodlands' David Essex (6.69). Three athletes should go to States.

2009 Section 1 results in State Meet: Ramapo's Chidi Ezemma, and Mt. Vernon's Justin Allen and Casey Williams went to States. Allen advanced to finals and finished 3rd in 35.02

State qualifying time requirement:  36.74

Another Mt. Vernon athlete, Michael Blake, leads the field at 35.21 followed by Edgemont's Adam Glanzman (35.30) and Pawling's Kevin Hunter (35.41). 12 other runners have gone under the State qualifier.
Three athletes will go to States.

2009 Section 1 results in State Meet: Clarkstown South's John Taylor, John Jay - East Fishkill's Ryan Gomba, and Brewster's Nick Arena went to States. Gomba finished 4th in 1:23.31 and Taylor took 5th in 1:23.47.

State qualifying time requirement:  1:24.74

Alex Shapiro of Beacon currently has the NYS 4th-best time this year at 1:21.84. Yorktown's Carter Humphrey at 1:22.54, New Rochelle's Jeremy Burke at 1:23.04, Mt. Vernon's Davon Moore at 1:23.34, and North Rockland's Dylan Landry at 1:23.84 follow. Again, three should qualify.

2009 Section 1 results in State Meet: White Plains' Mike Dapice, Fox Lane's Jamie Mitchell, and New Rochelle's Aki Bajulaiye went to States. Dapice had the best finish at 10th in 2:37.04.

State qualifying time requirement:  2:35.24

Five Section 1 athletes have met the requirement, though not all may be focusing on qualifying in the event. Leaders are Yorktown's Manu Kumar at 2:32.64, Mitchell at 2:32.84, Clarkstown South's Branden Hallas at 2:33.74, New Rochelle's Daquan Oliver at 2:34.13, and Fox Lane's Cord Sgaglio at 2:35.24. Likely 3 will qualify.

2009 Section 1 results in State Meet: North Rockland's Chris Carrington and Arlington's Jared Leslie qualified last year. Carrington was one of the favorites but was DQed, and Leslie finished 11th at 4:33.02.

State qualifying time requirement:  4:28.74

A potentially very strong field could be shooting for Section 1's spots, though again not all of the 10 runners who have met the qualifier may be focusing here. Lakeland / Panas's Jorge Garcia leads the field at 4:22.84, with Fox Lane's Cord Sgaglio at 4:24.23, Arlington's Eddie Merenda at 4:24.64, White Plains' Matt Soyk at 4:24.84, and Suffern's Kevin McKenna at 4:25.30. Fox Lane's Jamie Mitchell and Irvington's Julian Saliani (who finished 3rd last year in the Qualifier) are next at 4:25.78. The Eagle's Brendan Wortner appears to be around 27th in the rankings. Three runners should qualify for States.

2009 Section 1 results in State Meet: Pearl River's Mike Hickey and Arlington's John Muller and Adam Doherty went to States. Muller and Doherty finished 5th and 6th in 9:29.66 and 9:29.95. Hickey was 10th in 9:32.23.

State qualifying time requirement:  9:42.24

Again, a potentially strong field here as North Rockland's Nick Hughes is a shade ahead of Yorktown's Manu Kumar at 9:37.64 to 9:37.74. Suffern's Kevin McKenna at 9:38.04 and New Rochelle's Harrison Quamily at 9:38.44 are close behind. James Naglieri of North Rockland is around the qualifier at 9:42.94. The Eagles' Pat Wortner appears to be around 12th at 10:00.07.

55m hurdles
2009 Section 1 results in State Meet: Harrison's Claudio Dellicarpini, North Rockland's Ryan Lacossade, and Nyack's Jarmen Esperance represented Section 1. Dellicarpini finished 5th at 7.50, while Esperance was 10th in the semifinals.

State qualifying time requirement:  7.94

Five hurdlers have met the State requirement. Scarsdale's Arthur Whyte is 2nd best in NYS at 7.58, and will be challenged by Arlington's Nate Pickett at 7.70, New Rochelle's John Henry (7.90) and Joe Shinn (7.91), and North Rockland's Anthony Congress at 7.94.

Long Jump
2009 Section 1 results in State Meet: Harrison's Claudio Dellicarpini, Lakeland / Panas's Andrew Federowicz, and Scarsdale's Roscoe Balter qualified. Dellicarpini flew to 4th at 22-04.5, and Balter took 7th at 21:05.5, with Federowicz 15th at 20-09.25.

State qualifying requirement:  21-6

The depth for Section 1 is not so great here with two of the top athletes also having other events to focus on. Balter is back with the top distance this year at 21-11.75, followed by Scarsdale's Arthur Whyte at 21-7.25, and Beacon's Alex Shapiro at 21-2.5.

Triple Jump
2009 Section 1 results in State Meet: North Rockland's Dasheen Ellis and Scarsdale's Arthur Whyte represented Section 1. Ellis finished 5th at 45-2.0

State qualifying requirement:  43-6

This is not a strong event for Section 1 this year. Only Whyte has met the qualifying distance at 43-6.5, while North Rockland's Nick Bien-Aime is close at 43-5.0 and teammate Colton Lubaszka is at 43.0.25. At 40-10, the Eagles' Ramson Ragin would be around 15th in the rankings.

High Jump
2009 Section 1 results in State Meet: Section 1 had a strong group that included Arlington's Sean Reilly, Nanuet's Mike Carroll, and Beacon's Tejorn Davis. Reilly picked up a 3rd at 6-06, Carroll was 6th at 6-04, and Davis was 7th at 6-02.

State qualifying requirement:  6-4

No one has made the qualifying height yet. Scarsdale's Arthur Whyte is almost there at 6-3, and New Rochelle's close duo of Joe Shinn and John Henry are at 6-2 along with Brewster's Jason Dinardo.

Pole Vault
2009 Section 1 results in State Meet: Pearl River's Chris Spadaccini and Pat Scognamiglio and Arlington's Tom Brace went to the States. Spadaccini's tie for 18th at 12-0 was tops for Section 1.

State qualifying requirement:  13-0

At a towering 15-0, Arlington's Jordan Yamoah is 2nd best in NYS and should be a treat to watch on Saturday. Pearl River's Spadaccini is back at 13-6 with teammate Francis Depinto at the same height. Four other vaulters have met the qualification height including Brace and Scognamiglio for a very strong field for Section 1.

Shot Put
2009 Section 1 results in State Meet: Mt. Vernon's Robert Pope and Clarkstown South's Joe Fox went to the States. Pope had the best result of any Section 1 individual male athlete with a 54-0.5 throw for 2nd, and Fox tossed to 48-06.5 for 18th.

State qualifying requirement:  52-0

Although likely only two shot putters will be representing Section 1, local guys Fox at 56-5 and Mt. Vernon's Kaydon Davis at 56-1.5 have the 3rd and 4th best throws in NYS this year.

2009 Section 1 results in State Meet: Ramapo's team finished nearly a second ahead of all other teams to grab the State title in 1:31.05.

There are a lot of super fast squads in NYS this year, and Mt. Vernon is 5th among them at 1:30.72 and far ahead of Section 1 competition.

2009 Section 1 results in State Meet: Clarkstown South finished 7th at the States in 3:33.7.

Mt. Vernon again has the best time in Section 1 (by 5 seconds) at 3:21.22, which is 3rd best in NYS.

2009 Section 1 results in State Meet: Arlington finished 11th in 8:25.59 at the States.

New Rochelle has NYS's 7th best time at 8:01.94, with North Rockland 13th at 8:04.34, and Byram Hills 16th at 8:09.74.

2009 Section 1 results in State Meet: Spring Valley's Shilesha Johnson, Mt. Vernon's Tanaya Yarde, and Beacon's Tori Alexander  went to the States. All three advanced to the finals, where Johnson placed 4th in 7.22, Yarde took 5th in 7.33, and Alexander placed 7th in 7.37.

State qualifying time requirement:  7.44

The three State finalists from last year are all back and extremely close together with Johnson at 7.24, Alexander at 7.25, and Yarde at 7.26. Suffern's Jen Clayton is not far behind at 7.30, but will have the long jump, triple jump, and possibly the 4x200 relay to juggle.

2009 Section 1 results in State Meet: Ursuline's Kaitlin Mallinson and Saunders' Ihiechi Ohia-Enyia were the qualifiers. Ohia-Enye finished 10th in 41.24 and Mallinson was 21st in 42.94.

State qualifying time requirement:  41.34

Section 1 has a strong field this year with Mt. Vernon's Deajah Stevens currently holding NYS's 4th best time at 39.44, Edgemont's Marissa Lafayette 10th at 40.21, and Lakeland / Panas's Brie Roller 12th at 40.41. Mt. Vernon's Tanaya Yarde has run 40.84, and Mallinson is looking to repeat as a qualifier and is at 41.47.

2009 Section 1 results in State Meet: Mt. Vernon's Breanda Crump, Lakeland / Panas's Brie Roller, and Harrison's Nina Sarmiento went to States. Roller finished 8th in 1:36.88, Crump was 9th in 1:37.51, and Sarmiento was 18th in 1:39.77.

State qualifying time requirement:  1:38.74

Another strong field with some great times from the Sectional meets. Roller leads the field with an NYS 5th best at 1:34.50, North Rockland's Kristen Walsh is 7th in NYS at 1:35.44, Mamaroneck's Anima Banks is 9th at 1:35.94, Suffern's Meg McNally is 10th at 1:36.04, and Bronxville's Henrietta Miers is 12th at 1:36.84. Sarmiento is trying to repeat as a qualifier and is next at 1:38.34.

2009 Section 1 results in State Meet: Suffern's Christy Goldman finished 5th at the States in 2:58.79 and Tappen Zee's Calie Kohlbrenner was 26th in 3:12.23.

State qualifying time requirement:  3:02.24

Nanuet's Megan Young and Arlington's Hayley McMahon are neck and neck at 2:58.34 and 2:58.38. Kohlbrenner is looking to repeat and has a 3:00.04 time, with Ursuline's Shanel Golding at 3:00.34 and Mamaroneck's Gina Talt at 3:00.64 following. Bronxville's Henrietta Miers has 6th best time at 3:00.75. The Eagles' Lauren Hanley is 18th in the Section at 3:10.34.

2009 Section 1 results in State Meet: Section 1 was very strong last year, as Suffern's Shelby Greany finished 2nd in 4:36.41, North Rockland's Jackie Gamboli placed 4th in 4:42.04, and Arlington's Hayley McMahon was 18th in 5:00.48.

State qualifying time requirement:  4:49.54

Again, potentially a very strong field with 6 Section runners ranked in the top 20 in NYS. McMahon is back and has the NYS 3rd best time at 4:38.30. Other top runners (some of whom will probably enter other races) with qualifying times include Nanuet's Megan Young at 4:45.44, Mamaroneck's Gina Talt at 4:45.84, Tappen Zee's Taylor Jo Gillen at 4:45.94, Bronxville's Meredith Rizzo at 4:46.44, Pelham's Nicki Nesi at 4:46.74, North Rockland's Elizabeth Hekker at 4:48.04, Carmel's Sophia Maher at 4:48.34, Clarkstown South's Jessica Tobin at 4:49.44, and Tappan Zee's Calie Kohlbrenner at 4:49.54.

2009 Section 1 results in State Meet: Suffern's Shelby Greany was State champion with a time of 9:53.99, and just missed the double in the 1500 when she was beat out by Roslyn's Emily Lipari. Arlington's Chelsea Hanson finished 12th in 10:33.20.

State qualifying time requirement:  10:21.14

Pelham's Nicki Nesi is ranked 10th in NYS at 10:08.14 and Suffern's Ursula Svoboda is right behind in 11th at 10:10.24. Nanuet's Megan Young has a qualifying time at 10:20.24, and Bronxville's Mary Cain and North Rockland's Caitlyn O'Grady have gone under 10:30 at 10:28.04 and 10:29.54. The Eagles' Sarah King is 21st in the Section at 11:08.24.

55m hurdles
2009 Section 1 results in State Meet: Pelham's Brittany Brown and Peekskill's Nicole Cummings qualified for the States. Both advanced as far as the semifinals, with Cummings finishing tied for 9th in 8.52 and Brown placed 13th in 8.63

State qualifying time requirement:  8.74

Another strong event. Cummings is back with the 3rd best time in NYS at 8.12. Suffern's Sarah Bowens is 6th in NYS at 8.28 and Ursuline's Aeisha McDavid is 10th in NYS at 8.39. Other hurdlers with qualifying times include Woodlands' Diana Sainvil at 8.44, New Rochelle's Amanda Egbuta at 8.55, and Nyack's Lauren Voss at 8.60.

1500m Racewalk
2009 Section 1 results in State Meet: Somer's Crosby Tillman finished 7th in 7:17.92, Peekskill's Catie Davis was 8th in 7:28.67, and North Rockland's Catherine Savoia was disqualified.

Four other walkers have gone under 8:00, including Caitlin Larado of Pearl River at 7:52.54, Rye's Erica Gold at 7:53.74, Harrison's Kathryn Hoffberg at 7:54.94, and Clarkstown South's Deven Coulter at 7:57.24. The Eagles' Sofia Maluf is currently ranked 12th at 8:37.84, a time that would have been 10th in last year's qualifier.

Long Jump
2009 Section 1 results in State Meet: Suffern's Jen Clayton won the State championship with a leap of 18-9.05 on her way to a 3rd place finish in the Indoor Nationals with a leap of 19-4.25. Peekskill's Nicole Cummings made it 1-2 for Section 1 in the States as she jumped to 18-1.75 before taking 10th at the Nationals with a 17-11 distance. Woodlands' Alexis Easterling took 13th at the States with a 16-6 jump.

State qualifying requirement:  17-2

The highlight event. All is looking the same as last year, only better. Clayton has gone to 20-5.75 this year and Cummings has reached 19-6.5, with no other State jumper going beyond 18-9. Three other jumpers fighting for the third qualifying spot are Beacon's Victoria Alexander at 17-4.5, and New Rochelle's Amanda Egbuta at 17-4 and Christina Hamilton at 17-3.5.

Triple Jump
2009 Section 1 results in State Meet: Lourdes' Olivia Stevens finished 8th at 36-5.5 and Suffern's Jen Clayton was 11th at 36-01.

State qualifying requirement:  36-1

Like the long jump, the same top duo is back for triple jumping glory. Clayton hold the NYS 2nd-best leap at 39-6.25 and is in good position for a double gold at the States. Stevens has upped her distance to 37-1.75 and is in 12th position in NYS. New Rochelle's Christina Hamilton is close to the qualifying distance at 35-11.

High Jump
2009 Section 1 results in State Meet: Suffern's Janelle Clayton finished 3rd at 5-5, Pelham's Brittany Brown was tied for 4th on jumps at 5-5, and Nyack's Sally Gale was tied for 15th at 5-2.

State qualifying requirement:  5-3

Gale is back for another try at the States with a 5-5 height that places her among the top 8 in NYS. Irvington's Megan Talay is among the top 20 with a 5-4 height, and New Rochelle's Amira Yeiser is at 5-3 and Scarsdale's Laura Lutzker at 5-2.

Pole Vault
2009 Section 1 results in State Meet: Anjelica Gilsenan of Pearl River was 12th at 9-9 and Ursuline's Fiona Nugent and Suffern's Kaitlyn Cross were tied for 14th on jumps at 9-9

State qualifying requirement:  9-6

Carissa Leonardi of Lakeland / Panas leads NYS at 12-1. Two other vaulters rank in the NYS top 10 with RC Ketcham's Maddisen Melley at 11-0 and Ursuline's Claire Murphy at 10-7. Other making the 9-6 qualifier are Ursuline's Sarah Zagroba, Tappan Zee's Kelly Fischer, Scarsdale's Caroline Botvin, and Irvington's Sarah Moore for another very strong field.

Shot Put
2009 Section 1 results in State Meet: Charlotte Pope of New Rochelle threw to 38-6 for 7th place, and Woodlands' Lexia Robinson went to 35-4.75 for 13th.

State qualifying requirement:  37-7

The battle appears to be between two shot putters who have gone past 39 and are in the NYS top 10. Natasha Amazan of New Rochelle has thrown 39-6.5 and Arlington's Krissy Hoover has gone to 39-1.25. Ashai McLean of New Rochelle is a little below the qualifier at 37-2.5.

2009 Section 1 results in State Meet: Mt. Vernon dominated the event with a 1:44.7 time to win the State championship.

Mt. Vernon looks to get the opportunity to defend its State title. Their 1:42.62 time is 3rd best in NYS. Tanaya Yarde, Myla Allen, Kenina Bonner, and Shamika Mindingall are all available from last year's champion team. Suffern is the closest team in the Section at 1:43.14, the 5th best NYS time.

2009 Section 1 results in State Meet: Mt. Vernon finished 5th in 4:03.39.

Mt. Vernon holds a huge 6-second lead over Suffern with a 3:53.36 time that is 3rd best in NYS. Jessica Avila and Michelle McCrae are returnees from last year's team. At 3:59.24, the Mounties hold the 9th best time in NYS.

2009 Section 1 results in State Meet: Bronxville took a 5.3 second victory margin on the way to the State title at 9:19.2.

The Broncos have a 13+ second margin over Arlington with a 9:14.06 time that stands 4th in NYS. Henrietta Miers is the lone returnee from last year's champions on a team that includes Meredith Rizzo, Amelia Phillips, and Mary Cain.
