Steeplechasers Wortner and King Add to Eagles' Sectional Totals
On Saturday, May 22, Eagle steeplechasers Brendan Wortner and Sarah King made a cameo appearance at the Class B Sectional Championship at Byram Hills to compete in the final event of the Class C Championship. The trip was profitable as both runners placed in the top group to earn more points for Dobbs Ferry.
Brendan Wortner ran first and battled Bronxville's Dayton Flannery and Pawling's Bob Swick for 7 1/2 laps of the 3000m steeplechase. In the end Flannery did win as expected though Swick made it in close behind the lead Bronco with the winning time being 10:12.10. Wortner finished about 11 seconds off his best time at 10:22.9 to take 3rd and add 6 points to the Eagle totals.
The final boys team scores are Bronxville 192, Pawling 142, Woodlands 78, Dobbs Ferry 54, Albertus Magnus 35, Valhalla 24, Alexander Hamilton 19, Children's Village 16, Rye Neck 11, North Salem 6, Blind Brook 2.
On the girls side, Sarah King competed in the 2000m steeplechase. The race featured an encore performance by Pawling's Sami Jorgensen who followed up her earlier gold in the 3000m and 2nd in the 1500m to blitz away from the field and just miss the best time in the state this year with a 6:58.5. Bronxville's Meredith Rizzo was 2nd, Pawling's Zoe Nagasing was 3rd, and King ran a PB of 7:33.21 for 4th. The 4 points closed out the Eagles at 20 points in 8th place.
There were a couple of ties on the girls side as the final totals are: Bronxville 168, Woodlands 97, Pawling 97, Valhalla 60, Alexander Hamilton 60, Albertus Magnus 35, North Salem 22, Dobbs Ferry 20, Blind Brook 15, Rye Neck 6.
The team competitions are over for the 2010 season but a number of Eagles will be trying to win a spot in the State Qualifier meet this Wednesday and Thursday at Arlington and White Plains High Schools.
