Paulina and Pat Kick Off College Seasons for Binghamton and Geneseo
Ex-Eagles Paulina Nunez and Pat Wortner began their 2010 college XC running seasons with very nice results for SUNY-Binghamton and SUNY-Geneseo after strong summer workout sessions. Paulina started her senior campaign for the Bearcats on September 11 in a home dual meet with Siena. Binghamton won the 5K race by 16-43, taking the first 6 places as Paulina finished 6th in a time of 20:39.4. The Bearcats have a pretty light schedule and it appears that Paulina will not be running again until the Paul Short Invitational at Lehigh on October 1.
Pat Wortner began his freshman season with Geneseo back before Labor Day on September 4th at the Buffalo State Daniel Walker Invitational at Beaver Island Park. The Blue Knights' top returning varsity members such as Lee Berube were not running, so the meet was used as basically a checkout of the JV and freshman runners. Pat nailed the test finishing as Geneseo's first runner with a 14th place time of 26:44 for the 8K. He was back in action a week later at the Penn State Spiked Shoe Invitational, where Geneseo competed against 15 other Eastern universities including powerhouses Princeton and Georgetown. Geneseo finished a strong 5th, and Pat was the 9th Knight in with a 73rd place time of 27:18.8. Finally, on Friday September 17 while the Eagles were at the Red Raider, Geneseo was running at the Oneonta Invitational, and Pat had a breakout day on a team with a lot of fluidity in positions. Taking 16th in a time of 25:53, Pat was the 4th guy in for Geneseo, which finished 2nd out of 19 teams to St. Lawrence. Pat was the 3rd freshman in among the 288 runners, and his average time for almost 5 miles was a halfway decent 5:13. Pat now has a long break until the next meet on October 2 at the Geneseo Invite.
