Eagles Take 4 Medals and Individual 3rd and 8th at Coaches Meet
The DFXC team traveled north to Pawling on Saturday, October 23 to run with about 80 other state schools in the Section 1 Coaches Meet. The Green Mountain Lake course where the meet was held will be the site for the Sectional Meet State Qualifier on November 5th and then the State Championship Meet on November 13, so interest in the Coaches' preview meet was high. Though faced with some tough competition, the Eagles came away with 12th place for the girls in the Varsity I race and a 13th for the boys in the Varsity II race. The Eagles also picked up 4 medals, including a 3rd place race finish and 13th place overall for Brendan Wortner and an 8th place race finish and 18th place overall for Sarah King.
The day featured near perfect running weather for the meet, and the Eagles began with girls JV I race. The Eagles had a full squad running as they finished 9th. Lila Walsh led the way with a 39th place finish at 24:53.05, and she was followed in by Cara Horsfield in 67th at 27:14.58, Sofia Checa moved up to 71st at 27:17.73, Chrissy Whitty took 75th at 27:40.87, and Emily Bohl got 76th at 27:41.10. The girls were quickly followed by the JV I race guys. Grant Sheely was up to his usual tricks of picking on the older and bigger kids and took the Eagles' first medal with a 10th place finish at 19:15.91. He was followed in by Brian Martin at 40th in 20:35.31, Yusuf Kapadia in 40th at 20:44.30, Keith Hickey was 69th at 21:11.28, and Terry Taylor was 105th at 22:05.95. The guys were one runner short of having a qualifying score.
The varsity girls ran in by far the toughest race of the day, as they not only had nationally ranked East Aurora in the Varsity I race, but also the powerful North Shore team and a couple of other strong teams. Sarah King led the Eagles with her highest ever rated race at a 113 TR as she took the 8th place medal with a time of 19:49.46. Shanna Yue was the second Eagle in at 22:51.17 for 58th place, Rebecca Wiersma ran 23:56.38 for 76th, Sofia Maluf was 84th at 24:19.33, and Clara Winder was 102nd at 25:46.01. The Eagles finished 12th with 304 points.
The final contingent to go was the Eagles' guys in the the Varsity II race. Brendan Wortner battled at the top and finished with a strong 174 TR 3rd place finish in 16:40.26, knocking nearly a half minute off the time he ran on the course in a mid-August race. George Epstein picked up the 4th Eagle medal at his top ever TR of 154 with a 25th place in 17:29.01, knocking 2 minutes and 13 seconds off his August time and finishing 3 seconds ahead of Briarcliff's Steve Shine, his chief competition for the final at-large berth for the State meet. Connor Culhane finished 67th for the Eagles at 18:57.35, Gabe (Gage?) Natale was at 108th at 19:49.61, Matt Latainer was 112th at 19:58.97, and James Majeau was 133rd at 20:43.75. The Eagles finished 13th with 315 points.
The next three weeks will feature three championship meets for all and then some of the Eagles. On October 30 is the Westchester County Championship meet at Somers, which is a wild stampede of about 40 schools running in the same race. On Friday, November 5th is the Sectional Championship at Pawling for the varsity and maybe some JV runners. Any Eagles who qualify for the State meet will the return to Pawling the following Saturday to run in the Class C championship race.
