Eagles Field Big Team to Start 2011 Season
The Dobbs Ferry harriers will have a mix of veterans and many new faces on the team in 2011 as they begin an 8th season under helm of Coach JP Kaminski. The team has swelled to about 42 runners (21 each of boys and girls) according to Kaminski, overtaking some other popular fall sports teams in size. Only about 25 team members have joined up on the DF Track site to enter their names on the roster (hint, hint), so there about seventeen apparently running in invisibility cloaks. However using a little magic provided from another site, the names of hidden ones have been revealed.
The boys will be led by three-time States finalist Brendan Wortner who will be looking to not only win another Sectional championship but also take a States title. Backing him from last year's varsity are Connor Culhane, Matt Latainer, Grant Sheeley, Gabe Natale, and Bryan Martin, while Keith Hickey, Yusuf Kapadia, and Terry Taylor will be looking to move up. XC newcomers Liam Geron, Thomas Newman, Kenny Marshall, George Agyros, Con Bartell, Nick Kost, Gary Lu, Takanori Okkotsu, Calvin Sheeley, Max Shermet, Joey Stalluppi, and Ben Sterne will also be hitting the trails. The Eagles are ranked 4th in preseason lists behind Bronxville, Pawling, and Rye Neck in Section 1 Class C.
The girls are led by three-time States finalist Sarah King who will be looking to nail a third-straight top-10 finish at the meet. High in the competition for one of the 5 at-large berths at States is Shanna Yue, who is rated 6th among non-Bronxville runners battling for the Class C States tickets. Some of the other veterans back from last year's varsity include Rebecca Wiersma, Clara Winder, and Lila Walsh, while Sofia Maluf continues to rebuild from a severe leg injury suffered in February. Other experienced runners for the Eagles are Chloe Wang, Mary Constant, Karen Maehara, Cara Horsfield and Sofia Checa. Among the XC newbies are the promising Josephine Weidner along with Mika Andrews, Sasha Clarick, Emily Faro, Ursula Hansberry, Nell Klassen, Tara O'Brien, Madeline Schwartz, Annabelle Sheeley, and Lindsey Yu. The Eagles are ranked 3rd in Section 1 Class C behind Bronxville, and Pawling.
At least some of the Eagles will be competing in the Dobbs Ferry 5K on Labor Day and then officially opening the season by looping around Ardsley's hilly course on Thursday, September 8 followed by another dual meet at Irvington on the following Tuesday. The weekend inivitational season starts for Dobbs on Saturday, September 17, with most of the team at Bear Mountain Park for the Suffern Invitational, while Brendan Wortner heads north to run in a meet on the States championship course at Vernon-Verona-Sherrill high school. The usual nagging for provisions volunteers and sites for the Friday night pasta parties will begin shortly.
