Eagles Take 3 Medals at Coaches Meet as Team Preps for Sectionals
The Dobbs XC team traveled more than an hour north to Bowdoin Park in Wappingers Falls on Saturday, October 22, to compete in the Section 1 Coaches meet. Though there were some ups and downs on Bowdoin Hill for the Eagles, they did stash 3 more medals and got in an informative practice for the Sectional varsity races on November 5. Brendan Wortner, Sarah King, and Shanna Yue all earned medals, and the boys varsity finished 25th of 62 officially scoring teams at the meet, and the girls were were 21st of 42 teams.
The boys JV was the first squad to brave Mt. Doom in the #2 JV race, running with huge squads from Monsignor Farrell, Suffern, and Brewster. The guys finished 11th of 20 teams, as Takanori Okkutsu led the way for the Eagles by breaking 20:00 and finishing 41st. Terry Taylor was next in 70th, Keith Hickey came in 79th, Calvin Sheely was 99th as the first and only 8th grader in the JV races, Joey Staluppi was 136th, Gary Lu and Liam Geron came in 145th and 147th, Ben Sterne was 171st, and George Agyros was 181st.
The girls JV race started a half hour later at 3:30, and the girls finished 4th out of 7 teams. Clara Winder running as Chrissy Whitty was the first Eagle in at 43rd, followed immediately by Cara Horsfield in 44th and then Mary Constant in 46th. Sofia Checa, and Lindsey Yue were next in 49th and 50th, and Tara O'Brien in 53rd.
The boys finished pretty much exactly as expected in 12th in the deepest of the Coaches meet's three races. Brendan Wortner again led the Eagles with an 8th place in the race and 15th overall at the meet in a time of 16:47.24 (course PR by 2 seconds for B-Wort). Wortner drove past Westlake's Tom Higgins in the last 30 meters to post the best time on the day for all Section 1 Class C. Second in for the Eagles was Grant Sheely in 39th, the second best freshman in all the races behind Tappan Zee's Luke Gavigan, as he nipped the 18:00 barrier at 17:59.63. Next was Connor Culhane in 65th, then Gabe Natale in 86th, Yusuf Kapadia was the 5th guy in for 90th, Bryan Martin was 111th, and Thomas Newman finished off in 115th.
The girls varsity ended the day in race 3, and they finished 8th while running without #4 runner Josephine Weidner and Lila Walsh. Sarah King had a bit of a hamstrung day but finished strong for 8th place in 20:23.45. Shanna Yue had a big day as she earned her first Coaches medal and 80+ TR mark with a 21:33.24 for 26th, putting herself into contention for States as she posted the 5th best time among the Section 1 Class C runners fighting for at-large spots behind the Bronxville team. Annabelle Sheely was the third Eagle in and also the 3rd best 7th grader at the meet with a 22:28.53 time for 40th that set an Eagles' 7th grade meet mark and put her 8 seconds behind Rebecca Wiersma's 7th grader team course record. Though identified as an 8th grader, Nell Klassen was the 4th 7th grader overall and also fourth for the Eagles as she took 72nd, and Karen Maehara was the 5th Eagle in at 74th. Rebecca Wiersma finished in at 78th and Chloe Wang was 80th for the Eagles.
The next meet, and the final one at which all the Eagles will race, is the County meet up at Croton Harmon Park on Saturday, October 29th. Teams of all sizes from all over Westchester will be competing. The Eagles will then send 7 members of both the boys and girls squads to compete in the Section 1 State Qualifier meet, as runners will again battle the Bowdoin hill for a chance to run at States.
