Dobbs Ferry High School Senior

Sets Records in Track and Cross-Country

Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. May 10, 2012—

now surely go down in the DFHS history books. This past weekend, the 18-year-old Wortner

broke a 31-year-old school record by four seconds in the 3200 meters with his winning time of

9:27:3 at the Somers Lions Club Invitational. He also holds the DFHS 5,000 meter (3.1 miles)

record of 15:44 in cross-country. An All-League, All-County, All-Section and All-State athlete,

Brendan is on “track” to be named an All-American in the sport this coming June.

Last year, Wortner was the only Eagle ever to make it to the State Championships in the course

of one school year and in three different seasons, fall, winter and spring. He is also the only

DFHS athlete to qualify for the New Balance Outdoor Nationals, which were held in June 2011

at North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro.

As a junior, Wortner ran the 2000 meter steeplechase race at Nationals and placed a respectable

against the reigning national champion in his heat. Wortner ran the race in a time of 6:22. The

national record is 6:02. During the regular track season, Wortner usually runs the 3,000 meter

steeplechase, but they drop the distance down to 2,000 at the National competition. Wortner’s

personal best in the 3,000 race is 9:41:96, which propelled him into the State Championship meet

at Caledonia-Mumford High School in Livingston County last June.

Throughout the year, Wortner most often competes in the one and two-mile events, as well as the

two-mile relay. He only runs the steeplechase at bigger championship meets, which number

about five times over the course of the season. The steeplechase is a grueling long-distance event

where the participants have to jump over a water obstacle and seven hurdles per lap. Presently,

Wortner is ranked 28th in the Nation and 8th in the State in this event.

According to Dobbs Ferry track coach J.P. Kaminski, Wortner was heavily recruited by some of

the top college cross-country teams in the nation. He will attend SUNY Geneseo this fall, joining

his brother Patrick, a 2010 graduate of Dobbs Ferry High School, on the team. Geneseo’s crosscountry

team is ranked in the top five in the United States. “Brendan has trained hard this past

year to improve his distance and speed in order to get to the scholarship level. I never have to

push him to run and he has been more motivated than I’ve ever seen him,” said Kaminski, who

has coached the team for nine years. “He is one of the greatest high school runners today.”

Over the summer, Wortner trained with the Westchester Track Club out of Sleepy Hollow.

Typically he will be running 65 miles a week or more. Kaminski has been trying to up

Worthner’s mileage ten percent each year to ready him ultimately to compete on the college

level. Both Brendon and Patrick have their mom to thank for introducing them to the running

world. She was also an All-Section runner in high school and still runs to this day, often taking

the boys out with her for a family “jog.”

Kaminski noted that in the last race Wortner was in the lead from start to finish, which tells him

as a coach that “Brendan probably has it in him to go even faster. I know this sounds a little

corny,” Kaminski said, “but Brendan can go as far as his legs will take him!”
