Loucks and Westchester County Meets Bring Championship and Medals to Brendan Wortner and Sarah King
Brendan Wortner spent the time between Leagues and Sectionals productively as he raced twice at the Loucks Games and then the Westchester County meet to capture a championship and establish himself as one of the top two NY Division 2 steeplechasers in NY. Due to a registration snafu, the only other Eagle in action during the period was Sarah King, but she also came up big by gutting out her second straight silver medal in the County steeplechase.
At the Loucks meet in White Plains on Saturday, May 12, Wortner was up against NY Class C XC champion Brendan Smith of Christian Brothers Academy-Syracuse, the top steepler not only in Division 2 but also all of NY. Wortner ran strong, easily besting the State Qualifier requirement for the 3000m steeplechase as he finished 3rd in a time of 9:47.72. Following on his school-record win in the 3200 the week before at the Somers Invite, the time gave Wortner two SQ times and the potential for a double at States.
A week later, Wortner ran early in the morning at the Westchester County meet at Byram Hills on May 19 after he and King became last-day additions following a highly contentious registration issue. Wortner shook off the tension and an early challenge from archrival Dayton Flannery of Bronxville in the 3000m steeplechase to take his second County title this year and first ever outdoors as he ran to his second-best ever time at 9:45.28.
King faced off against the reigning champ Nicki Nesi of Pelham in the 2000m steeplechase. Also in the running was Bronxville's Morgan Nobles, the top challenger for the the Section 1 Division 2 berth at states. Nesi ran away from everyone, and Nobles collapsed after a futile attempt to stay with the champ. King came on strong in the second half to take her second 2nd at County in a time of 9:54.50.
Wednesday, May 23, the Eagles go to Valhalla to compete in the Class C Sectional meet. It will be the wrapup for most of the team, though a few will be trying for a place at States at the Section 1 State Qualiers in early June.
